AFEST

Advocating For an End to Slavery & Trafficking
Welcome to AFEST

While slavery was outlawed in the 19th century, it did not stop.  Today, people are victimizing others to provide labor and services in virtually every country around the globe.  The victims are isolated from their families and support networks, often being moved across international borders.  They are subjected to a variety of sometimes unspeakable physical, emotional and psychological abuses.  Their lives are cut short or destroyed.  Their families are devastated and their communities suffer.  It is a flagrant violation of human rights.

Today, an estimated 27,000,000 people are held in slavery around the world, including approximately 200,000 held here in the United States.  (Many think the worldwide number has now reached 30,000,000.)  The United States government estimates 600,000-800,000 victims are trafficked into slavery globally every year, including 17,500 trafficked into the United States.  It is estimated that 80% of the victims are female, and 50% are children under the age of 18.

The trafficking in persons industry has grown to the point that it now rivals the arms and drug trafficking industries.

Fortunately, there are many people dedicated to bringing these practices to an end.  AFEST provides you with information you can use to join these efforts, regardless of your means.

Informational resources include:

»        Name the Issue:  Developing a shared understanding of what slavery & trafficking mean is the first step towards working together effectively.

»        Get Involved:  Understanding what needs to be done to help bring these practices to an end can help you figure out how you can help.  Knowing how to recognize victims and who to contact with your suspicions can turn a victim into a survivor.  Buying goods made by survivors helps provide needed support and services as they reintegrate into society.  Giving your time or money to the many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that are working on these issues helps ensure the work can continue.

»        Learn More:  Delving deeper into the issues can equip you to add your voice to call for an end to slavery & trafficking.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
